Lighting Design

  • Pink and purple top/backlight was great for creating a somewhat frantic dreamlike/fantasy mood
  • Contrast between film noir look (cold blue front and side) and warm/evening/peaceful indoors (amber front/side)
  • A warm and a cool IQ were great for spotting/highlighting/filling places (e.g. image #8 above)
  • Preshow and the very start of the show (image #12 above) utilized fluorescent light fixtures. This look was revisited at the end of the show. (image #13)
  • One scene near the end had a rotating gobo and the full stage in backlight chaotically fading up and down continuously, creating a sense of chaos. Couldn’t be captured well via photography.
  • One light was hung and used very subtly in one cue to light an area without hitting a projection behind the actors (image #11 above)
  • Purple washes from the four corners were used for transition/scene change moments (and other things)

About 100 light cues in a 70-minute play, programmed on an ETC Ion console

Projection Design

  • Digital projector hidden below old slide projector on cart. Actor pushed both clickers at the same time, and we fooled everyone. (image #9 above)
  • Images adjusted in Photoshop to more closely match decades-old images sent with the rights to the show. See below:

Light Plot

Note: The light plot was originally done electronically, but since I did all the alterations myself after the initial hang & focus session, they were penciled onto the plot. It looks messy but it was the most efficient method as my own master electrician.
