Music Editing

Research into steampunk music resulted in use of musical material from two artists:

  • The Clockwork Dolls (particularly Iron Rose from Dramatis Personae)
  • Paul Shapera (particularly the Dolls of New Albion instrumental tracks)

Snippets of material were often edited and often looped as underscoring.

These were all edited from the Clockwork Dolls' piece Iron Rose. It was quite powerful to have a main theme reoccurring throughout the show, and Iron Rose was perfect for this, as an 8-minute song that used the same theme in a variety of different ways. (See videos #1 and #3 above) The most challenging part was manufacturing an ending from a song that didn't end the way we wanted it to!

These were all edited from Paul Shapera's Dolls of New Albion Instrumentals for underscoring some of the darker sections and moments of the show.

Sound Foley

Foley Sound was a team effort between myself, director Doug Scholz Carlson, all of the actors, Assistant Director Taylor Heitman who became our sound foley artist, and another crew member who was used in one scene to create two layers of foley sound.

Whenever possible we liked to have an actor create the foley sound live onstage (see video #2 above)

Sounds created with live foley included:

  • A "page turn" sound created by moving a long heavy chain run over a pipe on the grid
  • Sound of an anvil created with a wooden spoon striking a mug
  • Temple blocks, a rachet, and a slapstick for comedic violence
  • Bowed cymbal whenever a nasty character appeared
  • Singing bowl for moments of romantic longing
  • Two triangle beaters and a wine glass for the sounds of a file and of silverware on dishes
  • Actor vocalizations creating sounds of gulls, waves, wind, horses, and babies
  • Random notes plucked and strummed on an autoharp for creepy ambience
  • Chime with wooden mallet  for the sound of a church bell and a ship's bell
  • Forcefully closing a trunk onstage for the sound of a door shutting
  • Crinkling a lighting gel for the sound of a crackling fire
  • A thunder drum
